Hello everyone! I’m Brooke Norlin, your pink-haired social selling bestie, and today I want to share some insights into making strategic choices about your presence on social media platforms. In a world where digital presence is crucial, it’s important to know where to invest your time and energy. Below you’ll find the YouTube video where you can watch this blog post instead of read it, if you prefer: What Social Media Platforms Should I Focus On In My Online Business?
Time and Resource Management
First and foremost, let’s address a common misconception: you do not need to be everywhere. When it comes to choosing what social media platforms to focus on in your online business, the key is to choose your platforms carefully and strategically, focusing on those that will best showcase your brand and reach your target audience. How much time do you have to dedicate to social media? Is one platform going to be plenty for the amount of time you have to dedicate? Or can you add more? Also, consider the smart work I mention in the YouTube video above – sometimes you can be on many platforms by sharing content!
Consistency vs. Overextension
It’s vital to find a balance between being consistent and overextending yourself. It’s better to have a strong, consistent presence on a few platforms than to try and be everywhere and not manage to maintain your presence effectively. This really ties into the time management as well. Make sure you have the time to dedicate to quality and consistent content where ever you decide to show up!
Understanding Your Audience
When it comes to deciding which social media platforms to spend time on in your online business, knowing where your target audience spends their time is crucial. Each platform caters to a different demographic and serves different purposes. For example, LinkedIn is great for professional connections, while Instagram and TikTok are ideal for more visual, creative content. Try to think not only where they might be spending their time, but also where they’re engaging. Those platforms could be different.
Social Media Platform Strengths and Limitations
Each social media platform has its unique strengths and limitations. Instagram and TikTok are excellent for videos, while platforms like LinkedIn are better suited for articles and professional content. Understanding these nuances can help you tailor your content accordingly. Consider what content you enjoy and excel at creating. Which social media platform(s) will perform best for the content you’ll be making?
Platform-Specific Strategies
There are two things you need to make sure you’re doing in your online business and that’s develop clear strategies for:
- attracting new clients
- nurturing existing ones
You need a top funnel channel for new client acquisition and a community space for existing clients. Sometimes, these can be on the same platform, or you might need multiple platforms. But make sure you’re not hiding in a private Facebook group and wondering why your business isn’t growing. You will need to step out into the public social media platforms unless you have another way of finding new clients. Ex: Networking outside the home, a solid referral program, etc.
Take a look at the funnel below and consider if all of these steps are covered on the social platforms you’re currently using.
Analyzing Competitors
Keep an eye on your competitors or similar brands. Where are they showing up? What content is performing best for them? Use them as inspiration for what it would look like when you decide to show up on the social media platform. Often times we tend to shy away from looking for people who might be competition in our business. I think it’s important to understand your industry’s content, but do not compare yourself. You’re unique as are they!
Measuring Success
Don’t forget to keep your finger on the pulse of your business. Use analytics and metrics to understand how successful your content is on each platform. This data will help you make informed decisions about where to focus your efforts.
